Dear New York Poets, Poetry Whores, and Poetry Whores in Hiding,
Two ex-patriots from The Poetry Brothel, one in Paris and one in Barcelona, have amassed two divisions of ten poetry whores each. For our purposes we will be selecting matching forces of our own, 20 New York poets in all. Each selected poet will pair with one international poet to embark on The Poetry Brothel's inaugural translation project. Pairs of poets will work through correspondence to exchange one poem each, per month, for 12 consecutive months. It will be your mission to work with your counterpart to translate each of his or her poems into your native tongue. The same will, of course, be true across the Atlantic.
After the completion of the translation phase, we will bind together a selection of the poems you have completed in two bilingual volumes. After these volumes are produced, two Bilingual Brothels (one with the French and one with the Spanish) will be held in New York City with a cast comprised of the participants of the project, and one Bilingual
Brothel will be held in each of the two European cities respectively.
Please consider your language capabilities before applying, but do not assume that you need to be fluent in a language to translate it. Be clever, think of how you can make this project possible. Also please consider your schedule and the level of commitment you feel you can bring to the project. A strict time-line will be established and adhered to throughout. Editors fluent in each of the three languages will review your work, and work that does not meet the standards set forth by the editorial committee will not be printed or presented at these Brothels.
To apply please send five poems, a short biography, which highlights accomplishments that you feel qualify you for this project, and a statement of intent that details which language you would like to work with, your language capabilities and your reasons for applying. We are incredibly excited about this opportunity to experience and share the work of young poets from other countries. We will be acting as ambassadors for the New York poetry community and the United States as a whole, in addition to exposing our peers and our public to the work of twenty amazing European poets.
Please send all application materials in the form of one attachment to the following email address: translationproject@thepoetrybrothel.com.
Sincerely,
The Poetry Brothel Management
